My 98 Mauser arrived today....
The big brown truck stopped at my house today and dropped off this nicely sporterized 98 Mauser. (I love having a C&R FFL) This rifle sports a synthetic Fajen stock with the typical hard as a rock Fajen buttpad on it. The buttpad will be changed...lol. I have already added a Cheek-Eez pad to the stock as Fajen stocks are also narrow across the top and are known cheek eaters. Plus the pad brings my head up to the scope better.
http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...es/mauser2.jpg This already had the bolt handle converted, and has a Timney trigger and safety installed. The action is smooth and the single stage trigger breaks very cleanly. The safety is easy to use and the scope does not interfere. Before someone asks this is not a butcher job on the bolt hand but rather a very good way to convert to a scope friendly bolt handle. This kit has been used since the 50's and is very strong, unless you can heat treat after using a torch to bend the bolt handle I think this is the best method. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...es/mauser4.jpg The barrel was shortened to 22 inches and it appears that whoever did the work did a proper job recrowning the muzzle but it will take a range trip to verify that and we are looking at rain all week. Pardon my grey hair in the pic...lol. The brownish/reddish discoloration in the bore appears to be copper fouling not rust...a patch showed some green streaking so it will get a session on the Outers Foul-Out machine. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...es/mauser5.jpg Now before I hear about the weak American loads and how my new rifle is equal to a 30-30 here is the ammo I will be using for the most part. I have a couple cases of this set back for my Hakim as well as a couple cases of milsurp. http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z...es/mauser3.jpg I bought this as a companion piece to my 8mm Hakim and have plenty of ammo on hand for it. With the synthetic stock it is a light weight and a stock change may be in it's future...perhaps a Boyds laminated thumbhole. It will also be converted to use detachable magazines, Gibbs Rifle Co sells these for the Mausers. Hopefully the weather will clear up long enough in the next few days for me to get out to the range with this. For those who are interested there are several magazine options, the one from the Gibbs Rifle Co simply replaces the factory floor plate...they run 36 bucks per mag... http://www.sporterexpress.com/Gibbs-...ne-Long-Action or you can go this way... http://www.voere.com/html/mag_conver...ml#Seitenbegin I just ordered one of these as well....everyone needs a 20 round assault bolt action...lol. From the reviews on these They seem to run great if you load 18 rather than 20...sound familiar? http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z.../mausermag.jpg |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
Very nice. Everyone needs to drive tacks from a distance on occasion. Although I prefer 7.62 NATO for my primary it does have a Mauser action. I had a `smith who I could trust to do a proper job on the bolt handle but as you say, the way yours is done has become standard for those who can't wait 3 months for a custom job. You will most definitely need shock absorption, the ones I have that fire 8mm Mauser still have steel buttplates and I *will* have a bruise to show off Monday when I take them out.
Where did you get it/what did she run? |

Just a "heads up" in case you sell it down the road. How does your Hakim like the Olympic ammo? I've only shot mil-surplus Romanian/Yugo in mine. Although I've still got loads of Turk 8mm ammo, I keep that out of the Hakim to prevent "energetic disassembly." |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
I never could get my Hakim to shoot the lighter bullet well. When the Hakims were originally imported and you could buy them for 75 bucks for a like new one they had the Egyptian 8mm ammo imported as well and it was all 196 grain so I have always shot heavy in mine. I did adjust the gas port to reduce the bolt speed a bit as it was very energetic when I first got it. I closed it shot by shot till it wouldn't completely cycle then opened it a few clicks and have never had a problem.

You're very smart about adjusting the gas port. Lots of Hakim rifles out "on the market" have broken or missing extractors due to people feeding the rifle too much gas. That's not happened to me (yet), but I got a couple spare extractors from Ellison's a month or so after I got the rifle. Just in case. |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
A C&R is for collectible firearms in their original configuration.
Hard to see how any collector could argue that what you have is a C&R M98! I've had a C&R for something like 8 years now and I wouldn't want to have to explain that rifle to ATF. Gregg |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
I fail to see how several of these comments add to the original post in any way. I joined this forum because it seemed that people stuck to the subject rather than making posts that simply tore down threads...guess I was wrong....lol...

Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
Well, it could be that it was a C&R when he acquired it and THEN he had it sporterized.
Anything wrong with that? |

That's not "thread drift." That's pointing out a legal problem both for the OP and for somebody else that might not know any better. Otherwise we might as well all start some new threads with photos of our new "shorty" shotguns that we made ourselves with a hacksaw. Gregg |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
FWIW, the purpose of my first post was not to point fingers or find fault with anybody's actions. It was (as tulsamal alluded) to let folks know that not all goodies sold as C&R are truly C&R. I've done it myself as a buyer, before I knew any better (no details to protect the semi-innocent:smile:).
There are dealers who sold barreled actions as C&R, or Mosin Nagant rifles in plastic Monte Carlo stocks as C&R. There are people who sold stripped receivers as C&R (figuring that since they came from a C&R rifle, the receivers should also be C&R...right???). Knowing how wonderful certain government agencies can be, it might be a good thing to be aware of the "original military configuration" bugaboo should the owner of a sporterized weapon look to sell it on GunBroker or AuctionArms. |
Re: My 98 Mauser arrived today....
If you thought members posts were malicious when they are trying to save the OP from being screwed down the road by a possible ATF audit then you are a pretty big dumbass.
This forum is about passing along info to like minded folks. |
